First Phase of “IPA Open Seminar” Was Successfully Held

On Jul.15, the first phase of “IPA Open Seminar” sponsored by CCIPA was held. Song Ming, deputy director of the centre introduced the original purpose to found this open seminar, that is, firstly to establish a communication channel to transmission IPA in agriculture; secondly to create a free academic exchange platform; thirdly to form a mechanism for different stakeholders to exchange views and thoughts face to face.

As the first guest of the seminar, Xue Dayuan, professor of College of Life and Environmental Science of the Central University for Nationalities gave a speech titled “The Main Contents of Nagoya Protocol and its Potential Impact” Professor Xue has been long-time engaged in the research of Bioscience and Biodiversity Conservation. He has participated in the drafting, negotiation and the international follow-up activities of The UN Convention on Biological Diversity and The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. He also organizes a series of research program on international and national performance of the Conventions.

Professor Xue firstly introduced the negotiation process of Nagoya Protocol briefly and the breath-taking events happened at the end of negotiation. Then he introduced the focus issues of the negotiation in detail (which includes the using scope of genetic resources, compliance problems, the issue of traditional knowledge and access and benefit sharing), unclear contents in the Protocol, China’s related policies and regulations as well as the impact and challenge of the protocol bringing to us.

The seminar was in heated discussion and all the participants expressed that they really learned a lot in the communication. This seminar attracted more than 20 people from science research institutes and colleges, media and enterprises to attend.
